This tropical fruit has a tart orange or purple skin and an interior consisting of numerous small, fleshy seeds. It is also called granadilla (little pomegranate) due to its resemblance to the pomegranate. The passion fruit comes from the South American passion flower plant, which received its name from Spanish missionaries who saw in the configuration of its blooms the marks of Christ's Passion. The passion fruit is rich in vitamins A and C, and is often eaten raw, sprinkled over salads, or purÄed to flavor desserts and fruity drinks. A ripe passion fruit should be heavy for its size (full of juice) and the skin deeply wrinkled.
